about me

Mostly, I’m Mama to my noisy gaggle of three.

Once upon a time I was an elementary school teacher, which has been both help and hindrance in my current life as a homeschooling parent.

I write essays. In fact, I’m homeschooling my MFA in Creative Writing. At least that’s what I’ve decided to call my eighteen years of writing, revising, studying the masters, taking classes and workshopping. Surely I’ve earned a degree of some sort by now.

A fascinating book on natural intelligence explained that my learning style has–in addition to many lovely qualities–a tendency to show off. When I read that I was horrified–and almost as quickly realized it was absolutely true. Maybe a blog isn’t such a good idea. Remind me to be humble.

I get worked up about new ideas and new projects on all sorts of subjects. This means that my stack of library books is high, and my piles of dirty laundry are even higher.

I knit in whatever crannies of time I can find. You can find me on Ravelry, but I’m terrible about posting all my projects. I’m too busy moving on to the next one. (See previous paragraph.)

I have a fondness for kitchen gardens. We have three long raised vegetable beds, several fruit trees and a fence of olallieberry bushes. I’m hoping to replant the nearby slope of perennials all in herbs so we can go in the backyard and eat anything we see. A Willy Wonka garden. Next year I want a beehive.

Creativity fascinates me. I think it’s a fundamental part of a happy life.

I like to cook for the people I love, and to be cooked for by people who love me. All I want for Mother’s Day is my favorite spring pasta with artichokes and fava beans. Pour me a glass of rosé, and I’ll even shell the favas for you.
